The Màti Story
After founding Kabana, Stavros and Heidi Eleftheriou imagined a place where their designs could be experienced as complete collections. Màti became that place: a welcoming extension of the family’s Albuquerque workshops.
A name with meaning
Màti means “eye” in Greek.
Across generations, the màti has been worn as a symbol of protection from the evil eye. The meaning connects the Eleftheriou family’s Greek heritage to New Mexico and inspired both the boutique’s name and Kabana’s Màti collection.
From Coronado to today
A New Mexico family boutique
Màti’s first home was Coronado Mall in Albuquerque. Over the years, the boutique had a presence across New Mexico, from Albuquerque to Santa Fe, while remaining the place where Kabana’s creations could be shown together.
After completing his studies at the Gemological Institute of America, Nick Eleftheriou joined the family company in the late 1990s. For many years he represented Kabana in Japan while remaining rooted in Albuquerque, introducing Swiss watches and shaping a richer experience for every client who walks through the door. Today he leads Màti, carrying forward the work begun by Stavros and Heidi.
Nick has always had a special affinity for Swiss watches, and he focused much of Màti’s energy on building a watch salon worthy of the industry’s finest names. For more than five decades, the boutiques have been the local destination in Albuquerque where watch enthusiasts gather to talk timepieces, see the newest releases, and discover classic pieces.
Traveling the world with his father, Nick visited suppliers and clients from the Opal Fields of Australia to the turquoise mines of Arizona, seeking exotic colored stones for the pieces he brings home. Everything that comes through Màti’s doors is chosen by hand, and the longstanding relationships the family has nurtured across five decades remain at the heart of the business today.
